RTP used to be one of those boring metrics hidden at the bottom of a slot’s information page. Today, the importance of RTP in gambling is at an all time high. The reason is simple. Many providers today, offer several RTP versions of the same slot. You can get the same fisherman, bonus round and maximum win but much worse return for regular gameplay.
In general RTP means Return to Player. So, in other words, how much money you win back on average, for every £1 spent. Moreover, it also references what you get back from the casino in terms of bonuses, cashback and other ongoing promotions. In this article we will explain the importance of RTP in gambling and how the new UKGC laws are impacting players’ RTP.

What Does RTP Mean?
RTP in gambling means Return to Player. It is the theoretical percentage of all wagers that a slot should return as winnings over time. For example, a slot with a 96% RTP should eventually return ÂŁ96 from every ÂŁ100 wagered. The remaining 4% is the casinos mathematical advantage.
However, do not expect to deposit ÂŁ100 and receive ÂŁ96 back. Sadly, the reels do not keep a personal tab. The percentage is calculated across millions of spins involving many players. During one session, you could lose your full balance or land a 1,000x win. Moreover, the RTP is pre-determined by a random number generator, set by game providers.
Additionally, online casinos have ongoing promotions each month. These can vary but may include cashback, deposit bonuses, slot tournaments or even free spins. Each promotion offers an extra return on your money. And at the end of the month they all add up to extra RTP.
Why Slot RTP Matters
A few percentage points may not look like much. However, the difference becomes much clearer when you compare the house edge. A slot with a 96% RTP has a 4% house edge. Lowering the RTP to 94% increases that edge to 6%. At 92%, the casino advantage reaches 8%. This means that the 92% version has twice the house edge of the 96% game which is a big difference for the same gameplay.
Let’s add some numbers for example to make the picture a bit more clear. If you place £1,000 in total wagers, the theoretical loss rises from £40 at 96% RTP to £80 at 92%. Your actual result will rarely match those exact figures. However, there is no good reason to choose the 92% version when a 96% option is available elsewhere.
We find plenty of these reduced RTP settings when reviewing new fishing slots. Unfortunately, some casinos are much better than others at choosing the player-friendly version.
While a good RTP does not guarantee wins, you should still play on the higher versions, as it usually means your money will last longer. Lastly, always remember to play responsibly. Choose games with a good balance of RTP and volatility, and enjoy the fun of slot spinning without expecting guaranteed wins. After all gambling is based on luck.
RTP Is Not the Same as RNG
RTP and RNG are connected, but they do different jobs. The Random Number Generator produces each spin result. RTP describes how the slot should pay across its complete mathematical cycle.
This means a slot does not remember your previous losses. It also does not know that you have been waiting 300 spins for the bonus. A high RTP does not make your next spin more likely to win. It just means the game should keep a smaller share of all bets made over time.
RTP Does Not Tell You How a Slot Plays
RTP only shows the expected return. It does not explain whether the game pays regularly or keeps most of its potential inside the bonus round. For that, you will have to have a look hit frequency and volatility.
- Hit frequency is what estimates how often a winning result appears. However, note that a “winning” spin can still return less than your original stake.
- The volatility tells you how the payouts are distributed. A high-volatility slot can have long dry spells before producing a larger win. A low-volatility game usually pays smaller amounts more regularly.
Two slots can both have a 96% RTP and feel completely different. One might keep you spinning with regular small wins. The other might swallow your balance while you wait for one larger decent big catch. This is why we look at RTP, volatility and the bonus setup together. RTP is important, but it does not tell you all the information about the slot.
What Is a Good RTP for Slots?
We consider 96% or higher a good RTP for a normal online slot. Games between 95% and 96% are closer to average. Once the figure drops below 95%, the slot is considered on the lower end and harder to recommend. We may still enjoy its features, but the maths is working much harder against you.
Progressive jackpot slots are a slightly different thing. They often have lower RTPs because part of each bet also funds the jackpot. Even so you should check where the return goes. A low RTP is easier to accept when the game offers a genuine progressive jackpot. It is less cool when the slot just keeps more of every bet.
The Same Slot and Different RTPs
Many providers now create several approved versions of one slot. For example, a game might be available at 96.5%, 95.5% and 94.5%. And some providers go even lower. Often the casino chooses which version it wants to offer, or it is made for a certain market. The graphics, features and maximum win can stay the same, so you may not notice any difference.
But this does not mean the casino changes the RTP depending on who is playing. It selects one approved configuration and uses that version on its site.
However, it does mean an old review cannot always tell you the exact RTP you will get. We list the highest confirmed setting in our game reviews and mention lower versions when we find them. But we also always mention to check the information inside the actual game. If the review says 96.5% and your casino shows 94.5%, trust the number you see in the slot information at the casino.
How 2026 UK Changes Affect Slot Value
Remote Gaming Duty increased from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. This does not automatically change the RTP of a slot. However, it makes lower RTP versions more attractive to online casinos trying to protect their margins. Reduced RTP in gambling settings existed before the tax rise. So, we cannot blame the new tax for every 94% or 92% slot. But the added cost gives casinos that much more reason to choose those versions over the original 96% games. There are also more changes to promotions and bet-limits that likely will lead to lower RTP slots being offered to UK players, due to lower per player value.
The new UKGC rules limit bonus wagering to 10x. This will reduce the number of offers players receive. However, smaller bonuses with cleaner terms can still be better than huge offers with difficult wagering requirements. But the selection just got much more narrow.
UK online slots also have age-based stake limits. Players aged 25 and over can bet up to ÂŁ5 per spin. Players aged 18 to 24 are limited to ÂŁ2. These limits do not change RTP, but they restrict how much can be wagered on each spin. So, the main thing is still the game percentage. Check the actual RTP first and then look at the bonus terms separately. Our trusted UK casinos section explains what each recommended offer gives you.
Always Check the RTP Before Playing
As we explained the importance of RTP in gambling means you’ll have an enjoyable experience. So do not assume a familiar slot has the same RTP everywhere. Open the information menu and look for the exact percentage. If the game you see uses a 94% version but the provider also offers a 96% version, then have a look elsewhere. There are enough slots in the pond without choosing one carrying extra house edge.
You can also use our free slot demos to learn how the features work without risking real money. Just remember to check the RTP again if you move to a real-money casino.
Fishing Slots View
RTP does not guarantee wins, and it does not tell you whether a slot will be fun. However, it tells you whether the underlying maths offers fair value. For us, 96% remains the target for normal online slots. We will still review games below that level, but we will not say a 92% version is good. We know the importance of RTP in gambling and we hope this has enlightened you too.
The 2026 tax increase gives UK casinos more reason to use reduced settings and trim their promotions. Therefore, checking the RTP is now more important, not less. So remember to look at the percentage inside the game, compare available versions and read the bonus terms. A little checking before you start your session can save you from playing the worst version of the same slot.
